About Croatia and Croatia Holidays
The Republic of Croatia is a country that lies in the Southwest of Europe, near to the Balkans and the Adriatic Sea, and has borders with Serbia and Montenegro in the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina in the southeast, and Hungary and Slovenia to the North.
The Croats first settled in the county in the early years of the Seventh century. Initially, the country was divided into two dukedoms. However, the first King of Croatia was crowned in the year 925, King Tomislav, and the country finally became a kingdom. Many kings reigned for almost two centuries, until the 1100s, when the Hungary and Croatia entered a union. This Union lasted until 1918, when Croatia declared its independence, and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was formed. The county has had a turbulent history, and it was not until recently that it became fully independent due to the 1991-1995 Croatian War of Independence. It is now recognised as a country belonging to the European Union and is recognised by the United Nations.
Despite its turbulent political history, Croatia has become an up and coming holiday hotspot in Europe, and its popularity is growing year by year. The terrain in Croatia is extremely varied. The Adriatic Sea has a coastline full of rocky inlets; the Dinaric Alps contain heavily forested rolling mountains; and the north and northeast areas of the country are filled with lakes and plains. There are a number of national parks in Croatia, each more different from the last. This is mainly due to its assortment of climates. The east and northern parts of the country have a very continental feel, but along the rocky coastline, it is much more Mediterranean. However, there are subtropical temperatures in Palagruza, and temperate climates in Istra.
There’s so much to see. Croatia contains over a thousand islands, all different sizes and shapes. The larger Croatian isles can be found along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, where many tourists partake in island hopping. Two if these Islands popular with visitors are Krk and Cres. Inland, there are also many deep caves and caverns to explore, three of measuring more than 1000 metres deep, in the Slovacka jama, Velebita, and Lukina jama-Trojama cave systems. The country is also home to the famous blue Danube River, Europe's second largest.
These different attributes make Croatia a great place to visit, as you will literally have it all. Here are a few things you might like to do while you're there.
Visit Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik was nicknamed "The Pearl of the Adriatic" by George Bernard Shaw, because of its glistening buildings and polished marble streets. The walls are great to wander around, as are the monasteries and cathedrals, but here’s a tip: if you’re looking to explore, do so in the mornings. A lot of cruise ships have stopovers here and tend to release the passengers in the afternoons, which can get busy.
World Heritage sites in Croatia
Croatia is Thirteen Centuries old, and, unsurprisingly, offers the visitor an abundance of monuments, traditions, and landscapes. Croatia has an incredible six World Heritage sites attracting many tourists throughout the year. You might not be able to fit them all in during your stay, but take your pick from: Dubrovnik's old city; the Cathedral of St. Jacob which lies in Sibenik; the beautiful Plitvice Lakes; the celebrated city of Trogir; Porec and its Euphrasian Basilica; and the Diocletian's Palace in Split.
National Parks in Crotia
There are eight national parks in Croatia, which run down the coastline of the Adriatic Sea, all showing Croatia's natural stunning landscapes. In addition, there are a further ten nature parks and two reserves, so you definitely won't struggle for places to get a breath of fresh air and stretch of your legs. Many of the parks contain lakes and waterfalls, and exploring them is great way to spend a day.
Beutiful Beaches and Beach Holidays in Croatia
If you're a sun worshipper, and all this exploring sounds like too much hard work, fear not! The often-overlooked beaches along the Adriatic coastline amount to more than thirty in number and are sandy and clean. There are a few private beaches for the solitary travellers. A particularly nice one is Zlatni Rat, located on Brac Island.
Towns in Croatia
A holiday in Croatia isn't complete without spending a few hours soaking up some culture in the town squares. Not only are the many town squares great places to meet up with friends, they're also great to people watch. Any of Croatia's town squares will give you real feel for whichever area you decide to visit, as they tend to be the hub of excitement for miles around. Depending on where you go, you're likely to see some fantastic architecture too.
Food and Restaurants in Croatia
Immerse yourself in the local culture by dining like the Croats. It's little and often here. Breakfast is usually coffee and rolls, and at 10, you'll be eating again, usually goulash! Save some room, because Lunch is the main meal here, where you're likely to have soup, followed by meat and vegetables or noodles, topped off with a dessert. In the evening, you'll really only find lighter snacks, usually meat based. But the one thing you will notice is how much the Croats love their coffee. All day long you'll find coffee shops open throughout the country, and it's quite the social event!
When to Visit Croatia
The best time to visit Croatia is either in late spring or early autumn, missing the main tourist season. However, always try to book your hotel in advance to avoid disappointment, and also to get the best prices. If you plan to go in July or August, make sure you book your hotel way in advance. May is an ideal time to visit Croatia. The weather picks up, the days are long, and the locals are geared up for the tourist season, but you'll still get a lot of elbowroom walking through the parks.
Getting to Croatia
There are eight airports in Croatia, most of which are both international and domestic. It couldn't be easier to get there, and it's a rich and fascinating country that really does have it all. So what are you waiting for?
